  • Funny People
starring Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bana, Jason Schwartzman

Surprising departure from Judd Apatow that had a lot of heart and mind.  While it could have used some tightening, the almost episodic narrative structure was interesting and I appreciate a creator willing to depart from his standard fair, risking alienating an audience expecting another 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up

  • Iron Man 2
starring Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke

Terrible sequel to the wonderful first outing of Marvel's Armored Avenger.  While many thought this second feature in the franchise was comparable to the first, the story at times made absolutely no sense and many of the characters quickly lost their charm.  There are still good movies to be found in the archive of Iron Man stories; but this wasn’t one of them.

  • The Informant!
starring Matt Damon, Scott Bakula, Joel McHale, Melanie Lynskey

While not without its wacky charm and interesting performance choices, reading about the bizarre but true details that this film was based on I found just a little more interesting.  But maybe a light-hearted, amusing take on corporate greed and abuse serves as a nice reprieve from the nightly news.

  • Public Enemies (Two-Disc Special Edition)
starring Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard, Rory Cochrane, Matt Craven

Putting Johnny Depp with Christian Bale in a Michael Mann movie should have produced something more inspired then this by-the-numbers gangster movie.

  • The Hurt Locker
starring Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Ralph Fiennes, Guy Pearce

Powerful visually, in the performances, and in the writing, this window into post-invasion 2004 Iraq follows IED disarming techs through their tension-filled missions.  A hard movie to watch when one realizes these stories are still ongoing, but highly worth the viewing.

  • Avatar (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) [Blu-ray]
starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Stephen Lang

The visual brilliance deserved stronger writing to back it up, but otherwise a movie that deserves to be seen at least once in the theater if possible.  A beautiful ride for the eyes that could have been for the mind as well if Cameron would have given the attention to the page that he gave to the CG.  A popcorn movie with heart and eye-popping special effects.
